22 Days of the Major Arcana, Exploring the Significance of the Thoth Tarot. The Universe and The Aeon!

The Universe Happy Universe Card Day, I meant to post this earlier, but just getting around to writing about it right now in the wee hours of the morning. The Universe appears as the last of the Major Arcana, and yet it’s the first card we celebrate during the Thelemic Holy Days. The Universe is the completion of the Great Work, the Magnum Opus. It’s the full embodiment of the self, in all its varied aspects: psychological, cosmic, divine, human, primal. It’s the Cosmos unified as one whole. The Universe is encircled by the four Kerubic beasts, the bull, the lion, the eagle, and the man, corresponding to Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius, the fixed signs of the zodiac, representing the stabilized powers of the elements and the totality of existence held in perfect balance. It’s not so much of an ending, but a dynamic completion that expands and resonates out infinitely. It’s Matter as an expression of the Divine and not separate from the world of Spirit. This card correlates to the 32nd Path in the Tree of Life, connecting Malkuth (the 3D, the Earth, matter) to Yesod (Foundation). Yesod as the astral or template layer through which forms take shape before entering the material world. This Path represents the ultimate crystallization of Divine Light into physical reality, acting as the final stage of manifestation, which reflects the energy of the Universe as a whole. This card connects to Saturn, Saturn being the boundary that defines existence itself, representing the concept that form is what allows consciousness to experience itself. ת Tav is the corresponding letter, which represents many things, among them a mark, sign, seal, or covenant. But most importantly, a return to Oneness, or the completion of a spiritual task. We come from the expanse of Oneness and return to it, but in our return, we are a more expanded version of that Oneness, which is the heart of the message of the Universe. The Universe represents a cycle, rather than a linear process, and it folds back to the beginning of the Arcana, the Fool. The Aeon The Aeon, this card marks the Age of Horus, a new beginning for humanity, where we are rebirthing, awakening, transforming, and liberating from the oppressive nature of the past. It resonates with the transformation out of the original name for this card, Judgement, which came with the scorn of limiting and dogmatic beliefs. Unlike the older Judgement card, which emphasizes external resurrection and the judgment of souls, The Aeon celebrates internal awakening, liberation, and the recognition of one’s True Will. It transforms the idea of judgment from fear and restriction into the affirmation of personal and cosmic evolution. Instead, The Aeon honors the dawn of a new era of humanity, where humans awaken to their True Will, breaking free from limiting beliefs, and standing in radical authentic power. This card signals transformation on a cosmic scale, not just a personal one. It reflects the emergence of a literal new spiritual age, the Age of Horus. This card is connected to the Element of fire and represents transformation through fire and spirit. Although Crowley does not correlate this card with a planetary body, modern reflections do consider it a Plutonian energy because of the deep evolutionary nature of Pluto. The Aeon is the transition from old religious formulas of fate and judgment to a new paradigm of freedom, responsibility, and authentic self-expression. It is an awakening to True Will rather than fear of external judgment. The Hebrew letter is Shin, Fire and Transformation. The fire burns away the old, the old beliefs, the old structures, the limiting karmic patterns, and allows the transformation to take place. The Aeon card depicts the vast forces of the cosmos through the figures of Nut, the starry sky goddess who encompasses all possibility, Hadit, the winged point of pure consciousness and eternal energy, and Horus, the crowned child representing the dawning of the new spiritual age. Together they symbolize the interplay of cosmic forces and the awakening of human consciousness within the infinite expanse of the universe. This card is represented by the 31st Path on the Tree of Life, which connects the sephira of Hod to Malkuth. Hod represents intellect and understanding, representing the mental frameworks through which we understand and interpret reality. Malkuth represents the material world, the manifestation of the higher realities. This path is where intellectual insight and clarity from Hod are translated into tangible action in Malkuth, showing how spiritual truths are grounded and embodied in the physical world. It demonstrates the practical integration of awakening into everyday life, aligning thought and Will with material manifestation. This card is about actualizing spiritual truths through intellectual understanding, which leads us to acting out of Will. |
