JEALOUSY, ENVY, & HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
Over the years I have read for many clients who have experienced jealousy, envy, and competitive energy from others. Whether it be co-workers, so-called friends, or family members, the green-eyed monster always seems to rear its ugly head. Still, there is a difference between a handful of people scoffing at your success versus negativity, sabotage, and vitriol following you indefinitely. If you are experiencing the latter, it may be helpful to look at the relationships between parents, primary caregivers, and relatives early in life. If we experience dysfunction in our formative years, we will tend to relate to people in a disordered way later on. Without realizing it, we will allow unstable people into our lives because their energy feels familiar to past experiences. When healthy people enter our sphere, it may be difficult to relate to them and thus, we push them away unknowingly. That is why it seems as if everyone approaching us has a negative intent. We will then continue to act out unhealthy patterns until we recognize the flow and break the cycle. One way to break the cycle is to observe people at the beginning of a relationship. Pay attention to how you feel in their presence and watch their behavior closely. Do they make comparisons, jokes, or criticisms at your expense? Do they talk more about other people than goals and dreams? Do you simply feel uncomfortable when you are around them? Everything you are receiving is information as to whether or not someone needs to be in your life. True connections are steady, healthy, and measured. They typically don’t move quickly, and they also don’t involve competition or antagonistic behavior. If you feel a high level of annoyance or agitation, step away, be polite, and love them from afar. Many times, it is not who we attract that is the issue. It’s who we let in. So, take your time, move with purpose, and be kind to everyone. However, only be a friend to those who have earned it. You’ll know by the way it feels. SOUL SESSIONS |
